Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds
When virtual worlds originally came out, one purpose for them that was explored was using it as a way to hold virtual meetings for companies. This allowed people to attend meetings remotely which was especially helpful for workplaces that had employees abroad. This saved companies money on travel fees because it meant they weren’t required to fly in people they needed for the meetings any longer. According to Going to the virtual office in Second Life by Mark Tutton, "Not only did we save travel time, but because the environment was so engaging, a lot more ideas came through," he said. But this use of virtual environments as pseudo-workplaces didn't last -- no one here's about companies using Second Life or any other similar platforms anymore.
