Blog About Twitter

Twitter discussions are definitely much more casual and short than on Blackboard or in class because of the format of tweets. The limit to the number of characters one is allowed to write really forces one to shorten their message to fit while still trying to relay a fully realized thought. It also feels less formal because of the kind of platform it is -- discussing things on a social networking site just doesn't feel as serious so it may lead you to speak more casually. When participating in a discussion on Blackboard, it is clearly an academic platform so your choice of words is more formal and you are more likely to use evidence to prove your point. The lack of character limit also allows you to fully explain your thoughts easily and completely. An in-class discussion is similar in that it is in an academic environment, but because you are speaking more from what comes to mind and you may not have the time or resources to fact-check or provide specific evidence, it is a little more casual than Blackboard but definitely much more academic and formal than Twitter.

  1. Hi Syeda,
I agree that Twitter discussions feel less formal than Blackboard or in class discussions. It seems that we usually use Twitter for personal use rather than academic use. However, I think it's interesting to use Twitter in a classroom setting - this is my second time i had to make a Twitter account for a class. While the character limit does deter students from explaining their answers, I think it allows your thoughts to be more concise and may encourage conversation since people may ask you to elaborate. However, I also agree that an in class discussion is the good medium between casual and academic and allows students to portray their thoughts more thoroughly.
