Blog Social Networking

Blogs are generally good places for people to go to post their own opinions and experiences on the a (usually) public platform to be shared with others in similar online communities. This can be a very beneficial and interactive way for companies to speak to their consumers and target markets online. One company that is using blogs in a creative way is Walmart; in Michael Barabaro's article Wal-Mart Tastemakers Write Unfiltered Blog, we learn of how Wal-Mart chooses select buyers to try out products and write about their experiences with them for everyone to see. They do not screen or filter posts before they go up and this allows many consumers to read honest, real reviews of things they may have been interested in buying before going through with the purchase. This also encourages Wal-Mart's suppliers to really improve their products and strive to provide the best that they can because if not, consumers will read about it and possibly find alternative products to purchase.
Professional social networking sites are also incredibly helpful nowadays when looking for a job or finding out more information about a company or industry. It not only allows for job seekers to find and apply for jobs much quicker than in the past, it allows has exponentially decreased the amount of time needed for recruiters to find qualified people they are interested in hiring for their companies. In NPR's Social Networking Technology Boosts Job Recruiting, it is said that "Using LinkedIn, Steckerl says he can scout a group of job candidates in just half an hour." Not only is this incredibly efficient and beneficial for the company, it is also helping the people in the group of potential candidates.
But of course, all good things do have a downside and the biggest downside to social media is the issue of privacy. However you choose to use the internet and its many sites, you always risk giving up too much information or allowing things to seen or found out by people and groups you may not have intended it for. For example, if your job finds you on social media and they see you saying or doing things the company does not agree with, this can negatively affect your career and possibly future job prospects. This may also give large corporations too much power because there is the argument that your job should have no control over what you do or say on your private accounts.
Social media being such a new tool for everyone, it is ever evolving and we will continue to innovate and improve upon it so that it is a great tool to be used for businesses and individuals alike.
